Protecting babies is one of the first instincts parents have to deal with. As new parents we often cringe when our babies fall and bump their head. We do our best to keep them away from injuries. In earlier generations head safety through the use of bicycle, scooter or skateboard safety helmets was non-existent. Nowadays it is a requirement. We are getting wiser.
There is a new product on the market that actually protects infants and aspiring toddler’s heads as they make their way around the home. A company called Baby’s First Head Gear is marketing an attractive, safe and comfortable way for parents to protect those valuable little craniums. It is called the Thudguard; a wear-all protective foam helmet.
Essentially what the Thudguard does is protect a baby or toddler’s brain; they reduce parental anxiety and unobtainable control over their babies’ natural desire to explore. They also reduce fear on the child’s part when they fall which impedes pain and overall will increase a child’s confidence in their own mobility.
Children, as they learn to navigate around, have many challenges. Their neck muscles are developing. Controlling the movement of their heads takes time. Their legs are often shorter in proportion to the rest of their bodies so the center of gravity is closer to their head. Walking, running, crawling, pulling-up are all challenges and often involve a blow to the head if they fall during learning these activities. Many head injuries can be prevented. Use car seats, seat belts, helmets, and make your home safe from falls to prevent an injury. Establish good safety habits early so your child will continue them when they are older.
Charlotte Young is the owner of Baby’s First Head Gear. She is also a new Mom.
“What better way to protect toddlers heads,” Young said. “I loved becoming a mother and immediately realized there is a need for the Thudguard after searching for a product to protect my son’s head.” “I have seen my son fall enough times and cry in shock and from the pain that I had to take action”.
Thudguard was designed and marketed first in Europe and now it’s here in North America. In the U.S. the product became available through the launch of a website (www.babysfirstheadgear.com) in March 2008. The helmets are available in blue and lilac.
